Choisir un hébergeur web peut paraître anodin, et est donc souvent fait avec une certaine légèreté. Pourtant, l’hébergement est hautement stratégique : de l’hébergement web, peut dépendre le bon fonctionnement de votre site et les langages de programmation à utiliser.

Voici les points qui me semblent importants de vérifier avant de faire votre choix :

• Le volume d’espace : pour un site simple de quelques pages en HTML, environ 100 Mo suffisent. Néanmoins, n’hésitez pas à prendre un volume d’espace plus important si votre site est plus complexe, tant au niveau de son architecture que de son/ses langages de programmation.
• Le volume de trafic : Cela correspond à l’envoi de données que vous attribuez à vos visiteurs. Pour un site recevant 100 visiteurs par jour, 1 Go suffit. A vous de faire le calcul ! Regardez le nombre de pages vues dans un temps donné, et calculez le volume de votre trafic.
• La bande passante : le temps, c’est de l’argent … Et ceci est encore plus vrai sur Internet ! Vos visiteurs/clients potentiels n’attendront pas longtemps le chargement de vos pages. Donc ne lésinez pas sur la bande passante. Un site rapide dans son chargement est souvent gage de sérieux (pour moi en tout cas, cela me laisse toujours une bonne impression).
• Les langages de programmation supportés : ce point est souvent laissé pour compte … Pourtant, il détermine les technologies/langages que vous pourrez integrer dans votre site. Il faut que vous scrutez les langages de programmation compatibles avec le serveur (PHP, MySQL, etc. …), leurs versions (PHP 4, PHP 5, etc. …), et enfin les technologies supportées (streaming vidéo, lecteur audio, etc. …).
• Le système d’exploitation du serveur : linux ? windows server ? Le OS définit les technologies supportées par le serveur.
• La sécurité : ce point est très important pour les site de e-commerce qui prévoyerait d’installer un système de paiement en ligne sécurisé (HTTPS, SSL, etc. …).
• La localisation géographique du serveur : la géolocalisation devient prépondérante sur Internet, et donc pour le référencement aussi. Prenons l’exemple de Google Adwords ou de MSN Adcenter, qui vous propose d’afficher un lien sponsorisé selon la zone géographique de votre choix. Si vous choisissez de cibler le Québec, et que votre serveur est hébergé aux Etats-Unis, vous serez pénalisé et difficile à trouver à trouver au niveau local.
• Les conditions de services : lisez bien les conditions générales et les engagements pris par votre hébergeur en ce qui concerne les sauvegardes, la qualité du service, etc. …
• Les coûts: assurez-vous que ses forfaits sont compétitifs en comparant avec d’autres entreprises de la même région offrant des services similaires (assurez-vous de demander quel type de bande passante ils utilisent, tel que Peer1 Networks pour le Canada).
